چکیده

Heritability for incidence of entropion was estimated in an experimental flock of purebred (Columbia (C), Polypay (P), Rambouillet (R), Suffolk (S), and Targhee (T)) and crossbred (from matings of Finnsheep rams with C, R and T ewes, from Merino X R matings, and from miscellaneous other matings) lambs. Data from 1986 to 1994 which included 39 440 records were analyzed using a multiple trait REML program with an Animal Model (AM). Overall mean incidence rate for entropion was 3.1% over a 9 year period, ranging from 1.1% in 1988 to 5.0% in 1989. Breed group ranking within each year was consistent, with overall mean incidence rates of 10.4%, 6.9%, 6.4%, 3.7%, and 3.3% for Suffolk, Merino-crosses, Columbia, Targhee, and Rambouillet groups, respectively. Purebred Polypay and Finn-crossbred lambs each had 1.0% overall incidence rate. For all breed groups analyzed together, the direct heritability estimate for incidence of entropion was 0.15. Heritability estimates for separate purebred groups were 0.21, 0.17, 0.10, 0.09 and 0.08 for C, S, T, R and P, respectively. It was concluded that selection against entropion can lower incidence rates, at least in Columbia and Suffolk breeds.

Occurrence of congenital disorders in Swiss sheep

BACKGROUND The rates of congenital disorders in Swiss sheep were determined by a questionnaire which was sent to 3,183 members of the Swiss Sheep Breeders' Association. FINDINGS A total of 993 questionnaires were returned, giving a response rate of 31.2%. Of these, 862 questionnaires originated from farms keeping one of the predominant Swiss sheep breeds: Swiss White Alpine sheep, Brown-Heade...

Genome-Wide Association Identifies SLC2A9 and NLN Gene Regions as Associated with Entropion in Domestic Sheep

Entropion is an inward rolling of the eyelid allowing contact between the eyelashes and cornea that may lead to blindness if not corrected. Although many mammalian species, including humans and dogs, are afflicted by congenital entropion, no specific genes or gene regions related to development of entropion have been reported in any mammalian species to date. Entropion in domestic sheep is know...

Genetic structure and diversity among sheep breeds in the United States: identification of the major gene pools.

Understanding existing levels of genetic diversity of sheep breeds facilitates in situ and ex situ conservation activities. A comprehensive evaluation of US sheep breeds has not been previously performed; therefore, we evaluated the genetic diversity among and within 28 US sheep breeds. Both major and minor breeds were included in the analysis and consisted of 666 animals from 222 producers loc...

Usefulness of subjective ovine milk scores: II. Genetic parameter estimates.

Genetic parameters for a subjective milk score given to ewes within 24 h of parturition were estimated to determine the usefulness of milk score as a selection trait to improve milk production, which influences total litter weight weaned. Heritability of milk score and the genetic correlation of milk score with litter weight weaned were estimated by REML separately for four sheep breeds, Rambou...
